Chapter 1: One stormy night
It was one hell of a stormy night. Raindrops were drumming against the lone window of Java’s room while he was sitting in front of his computer just like every other night. Every time thunder struck it felt like the earth itself shook in fear.
“Guess I’ll just store the Potion in my storage as usual”, Java mumbled to himself and fiddled with the keyboard.
A particularly loud roar of thunder boomed above the small town and Java felt the hair on his back raise. He hadn’t seen such a storm before in the 16 years of his life. He was sure he would have to watch out for massive puddles when fetching the mail in the morning.
A yawn escaped from Java’s mouth and he stretched his arms above his head. It was already late and he should’ve gone to sleep hours ago. Stretching his legs he got up from his chair and shut down the computer. Besides the table that his computer rested on there wasn’t much else in the room. A lonely television with a game console connected to it laid on the floor not too far from him and he could barely make out the silhouette of his bed on the other side of the room. With the computer monitor off, the room was almost pitch black. That or his eyes just hadn’t adjusted to the darkness yet.
He started walking slowly across the room towards his bed. He was glad there wasn’t too much junk in his room. Nothing hurt quite as much as stepping on something small and sharp in the darkness.
“Honey”, Java heard a muffled sound from downstairs. “Come quick.”
What did mother want from him this late at night?

Java stepped down the stairs quickly only to find his mother sitting in front of the television. He could barely hear his footsteps over the deep growl of the storm raging outside. What was the fuss all about?
Intensively watching television, mother noticed Java only at the bottom of the staircase. “Honey, come take a look.”
Walking towards the couch Java glanced at the TV screen. It showed a reporter interviewing a black-haired man in some kind of a high-tech facility - apparently in Saffron City, as the screen informed him. Judging from the distress that was going on in the background it seemed something big was happening in the city.
“What about it?” Java asked his mother about the show. It didn’t seem all that interesting.
“Don’t tell me you have that little interest in your father.”
“Dad?”
“He’s in Saffron, don’t you remember? Don’t tell me you aren’t worried about him?”
Like always, Mom was worried immediately when Dad’s travels took him close to something even remotely dangerous. “Why should I be worried? What’s going on?”
“They’re talking about that disease that’s been all over the news lately”, his mother said upset. “It’s been spreading like wildfire and almost all the big cities now have an epidemic on their hands. Including Saffron.”
Finally piquing an interest Java sat down beside his mother and started wathing. Could Dad actually be in trouble?
“…it’s bad enough that our facilities are at over capasity”, the interviewee said, “but Team Rocket also causing trouble at the same time? We could do without that.”
“So people are relying on the Pokemon Centers to treat their Pokemon?” the reporter asked the man.
“Yes, even though we’ve said that we don’t have the cure, people seem to think regular healing will stall the progress of the disease. But Rollington’s is not something we can treat. It’s true we have some temporary remedies, but their effect is not guaranteed in any way. We’ve had reports from Indigo Plateau that some progress has been made, but it’s still all very grimm.”
“Does the disease spread from Pokemon to human?”
“Not that we are aware of. It seems that the disease only spreads between members of the same race, human to human and Pokemon to Pokemon. But despite that, it’s worrying we’ve had almost more human casualities than Pokemon. We’ve had to limit our resources and start regulating Pokemon Center usage.”
Mother turned to Java and squeezed his hand. “What if father has been infected? We haven’t heard from him in over a month! What if he’s already dead? What will-“
“Mom”, Java scowled, “calm down. Dad doesn’t keep too regular contact anyways does he? I think I can remember more than a few times we didn’t hear from him for over two months. So calm down and don’t get ahead of things.”
“…so do you have any advice for people at home?” the reporter continued.
“There isn’t really much you can do I’m afraid. The best course of action is to keep an eye out for symptoms. If you’re suffering from a constant rash, a very dry cough, you’re losing sensation from any of your limbs or suffering loss of eyesight you should contact your nearest hospital immediately. Don’t panic if you have a little itch or cough from time to time, it might be nothing, but if your whole body is filled with sores or you’re coughing up blood, it might be a very good time to seek medical attention.”
The news program then moved on to other topics. It really seemed this Rollington’s was quickly becoming an epidemic. It didn’t make you feel any easier that there was no cure to be had yet and the result of the disease was death. Java let out a deep sigh and got up from the couch.
“Well I guess that’s that then. I’m gonna hit the bed. Night Mom.”
Just as he started to walk towards the staircase Java felt mother grab his wrist. He turned around to look and saw tears in her eyes.
“Mom, I said Dad’s gonna be just fine-“
“It’s not that honey”, mother interrupted him. She held her hand in front of her mouth and Java noticed a small patch of blood on her palm.
“Java, I think you should call the doctor…”
“Mom…”
Java felt himself choke, unable to speak. She couldn’t be sick, not Mom. Rollington’s was raging in the big cities with lots and lots of people, not in small towns like Pallet. How could’ve it ended up here? If Mom was sick she would die! And there was no cure. Java felt helpless. He didn’t want Mom to die, but what could he do?
Java felt tears swelling up in his eyes. He wouldn’t let Mom die, he wouldn’t. Even if he had to walk all the way to that Indigo Plateau he’d find something. As Mom coughed up more blood he took her in his arms and wept silently. A great roar of thunder shook the floor under his feet.
He swore he’d do what ever it took.
